Benjamin Schmechel

Benjamin Schmechel is a grades teacher at Desert Marigold School, where he brings an unusually rich blend of intellectual curiosity, artistic creativity, and social consciousness to the classroom. With degrees in Architecture from Princeton and Fine Art from Central St. Martins in London, Benjamin’s teaching reflects a deep commitment to exploration and interdisciplinary learning. He designs lessons that connect history, science, literature, and art—helping students engage with the world in ways that are both meaningful and imaginative.

His career path has taken him from academic settings to community work and hands-on craftsmanship. He has worked as a landscape designer, studio assistant for a major sculptor, and a builder of tiny homes for people experiencing homelessness. He has volunteered in prison education programs, senior care centers, and school art rooms. Benjamin also helped create a social innovation project at Princeton aimed at transforming neglected dormitory kitchens into communal spaces—a reflection of his constant drive to reimagine environments for connection and care.

Before joining DMS, Benjamin taught at Brightwater Waldorf School in Washington, led outdoor programming, and participated in school governance and repair projects. He brings to our board not only the perspective of a classroom teacher but also the heart of an artist and the sensibility of a community builder. His broad experiences—and his deep humility—make him a powerful advocate for children, teachers, and creative educational practice.
