Movement Teacher

Job Description: 

As a member of the faculty at Desert Marigold School, the Movement Teacher is responsible for the physical education of elementary and middle school students. Movement is integral to the Waldorf curriculum, and the movement teacher works to introduce basic physical and motor development skills to younger students and to develop these throughout the grades. The movement program at DMS includes 5th grade pentathlon, 6th grade medieval games, and sports. The movement teacher will provide curriculum for Games and Movement for grades 1 through 12. 


The ideal candidate should be interested in Waldorf-inspired, developmentally-based games and traditional sports. Teaching experience in classroom/group settings. Willingness to learn about Waldorf education and incorporate Waldorf principles of child development into teaching:

Areas of focus:

  • Creative in utilizing campus spaces to develop a well-rounded program for individual and group movement

  • Assist in 5th grade in its pentathlon preparation and 6th grade in its medieval games preparation

  • Have abilities in volleyball, soccer, basketball coaching, and other sports along with health and fitness for children of various ages


Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement a Games and Movement curriculum for grades 1–12

  • Aligned with Waldorf educational principles

  • Lead outdoor and indoor movement classes that encourage playfulness, coordination, rhythm, and cooperation

  • Establish healthy daily and weekly rhythms that support students’ physical and emotional well-being

  • Collaborate with class teachers and colleagues to support the integration of movement and play across the curriculum

  • Participate in faculty, realm meetings and school events as appropriate for full-time faculty

  • The position may include coordinating some after-school athletics activities for the middle school students


Qualifications:• 

  • Bachelor’s degree DESIRED 

  • Background in Movement Education, Physical Education, or a related field preferred

  • Experience teaching elementary and teenage children, ideally in a Waldorf or experiential learning setting

  • Exemplary classroom management, discipline, and interpersonal communication skills

  • DESIRED: Waldorf teacher training or Spatial Dynamics training

  • Enthusiasm for outdoor education and a love of play and movement with children.

Base Salary

$40,000 plus experience and credentials
