Position Summary

The Onsite Substitute Teacher provides classroom coverage and student supervision when a

regular teacher is absent. The substitute may be assigned to any classroom or grade level based

on the needs of the school.

The ideal candidate understands and appreciates a Waldorf-inspired educational approach and

is able to support the rhythm, relationships, routines, and developmental needs of students. The

substitute will work to maintain continuity with the classroom teacher's established program,

creating a warm, respectful, structured, and engaging environment in which students can

continue their learning.

Essential Job Duties

• Provide reliable, in-person classroom coverage for teachers who are absent.

• Be prepared to work with students across grade levels and subject areas, as assigned.

• Follow the classroom teacher's lesson plans, daily rhythm, routines, and instructional

directions.

• Support the continuity of the classroom experience by maintaining familiar routines,

expectations, and transitions.

• Create a warm, calm, respectful, and welcoming classroom environment consistent with

Waldorf-inspired educational practices.

• Engage students through developmentally appropriate learning activities that may include

storytelling, artistic activities, movement, music, practical activities, academic work, and

opportunities for imagination and creativity.

• Honor the developmental stage and individual needs of students while maintaining

appropriate classroom expectations.

• Encourage students' curiosity, creativity, independence, responsibility, and respect for

others.

• Support learning through meaningful relationships, clear expectations, purposeful

activity, and positive adult modeling.

• Provide appropriate supervision and guidance during classroom activities, transitions,

recess, lunch, assemblies, and other assigned activities.

• Maintain a healthy balance of structure and flexibility while responding to the needs of

the class.

• Use calm, respectful, and restorative approaches when addressing student behavior and

classroom challenges.

• Support students in participating fully in the established classroom rhythm rather than

unnecessarily introducing competing routines or approaches.

• Follow the regular teacher's plans and preserve the integrity of the teacher's curriculum

and classroom practices whenever possible.

• Communicate relevant classroom, student, or behavioral concerns to the appropriate

teacher or administrator.

• Collaborate respectfully with faculty, staff, and administrators.

• Follow all school policies, procedures, safety requirements, and student supervision

expectations.

• Maintain confidentiality regarding student information and school matters.

• Leave the classroom organized and provide the returning teacher with relevant

information regarding the day's activities, student needs, and any significant concerns.

• Adapt readily to assignments in different classrooms, grade levels, and developmental

settings.

• Perform other duties as assigned by the administration.

Qualifications

• College degree,

• Teaching experience or Waldorf education experience preferred.

• Experience working with children or adolescents in a school, childcare, coaching, camp,

or related setting preferred.

• Familiarity with or willingness to learn about Waldorf-inspired education.

• An appreciation for developmentally appropriate, experiential, artistic, creative, and

relationship-centered approaches to education.

• Ability to establish positive relationships with students while maintaining appropriate

boundaries and expectations.

• Strong communication, interpersonal, and classroom management skills.

• Ability to follow lesson plans and established classroom routines while adapting

appropriately to the needs of students.

• Dependable, punctual, flexible, and comfortable working independently.

• Ability to remain calm, patient, and engaged in a variety of classroom situations.

• Commitment to creating a respectful, inclusive, and supportive learning environment.

• Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding students, families, faculty, and school

matters.

Qualifications

• Skills, Knowledge, and/or Abilities Required:

  Skills:

  • Historically strong administrative responsibilities

  • Excellent listening, verbal, written and interpersonal communication

  Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of Waldorf education and public school operations a plus

  • Knowledge of Google software suite

  • Knowledge of basic office equipment (copier, printer, scanner, multi-line VOIP system)

  Ability

  • Relate to, motivate, and challenge children and staff

  • Leadership in working with students, staff, parents and community

  • Commitment to the concept of collaborative decision making

  • Understand discretion and the basics of FERPA laws

• Education required: High School diploma or equivalent

  Licenses, Certifications, Bonding and/or Testing Required:  AZ DPS Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card,  CPR, BBP and First Aid CertificationWork Environment

This is an onsite, as-needed substitute position. Assignments may vary from day to day

depending on the school's staffing needs. The substitute should be comfortable moving between

classrooms and grade levels and working with students from early childhood through high

school, as assigned.
